The Myth of the Hermes Birkin Waiting List

Why is it that back in 2002 and 2003 I put my name on numerous Birkin Waiting Lists at Hermes stores all over Europe and now, ten years later, I've never been contacted? I thought the "waiting list" was approximately two years long. But here's the conundrum: when I went into an Hermes store and purchased some scarves, jewelry and clothing the Birkin bags magically appeared - immediately - sans waiting list.
